Our system needs help - How we can reboot the system:
I do not believe corporate money should be involved in politics. A company that cannot vote should not speak louder than its employees.
Help pass legislation to reject or reform Citizens United into something that does not overpower the people. That ruling by the Supreme Court has horribly twisted our democracy into something ugly that does not represent the actual populace.
Running a campaign for any office should not be a money game. A campaign should not be about money but about solutions to problems, paying attention to your constituents, and trying your best to make the world better than it is. Long ago, I learned the basic campground rule: You leave any place you visit better than you found it. The same needs to be done for our home and country.
One simple rule: Corporations are not people; they do not get a vote. Entities that cannot vote should not gain sway of a politician through "donations". Make it a law. No one should support a candidate who complains about money in politics while taking full advantage of the current corrupt system.
The system as is uses the lines 'playing politics' and 'politics as usual'. We all use those phrases. And we need to fix that. Running the country is not a game and should not so readily be associated with corruption and an inability to listen to another person with basic decency.
Decency and respect for another person's humanity should be demanded from our politicians. If you act like a petulant child, you get the responsibility of one - none. Vote them out of office. That person is not doing the job; not working for you or the country.
The infamous K Street in Washington D. C. has a hold on those who are supposed to represent the people who elected them to office. The system as is has us believing that our politicians are near hostages to D. C. and the lobbyists who prey there.
We have video conferencing for global companies but not our nation's leaders? Our nation has the security to remotely trigger a warhead or call down a drone strike but we cannot figure out how to place a secure vote on a bill from Washington State to Washington D.C.? We can do this. We have the skills. Let those who are elected be surrounded by those who elected them.
Our tax code is absurdly complex. Although our politicians talk about cleaning it up and improving the system, the code's complexity and loopholes were caused by lobbyists and are fuel for future special interests - not the interests of the people.
Time and again, the system as is corrupts our representatives with the demand for more and more money. Yet, it is not just the money. These people get twisted and turned into what the party wants; not what the people desire. They contort into painful and alien perspectives because that is what the party tells them will get votes and we end up thinking we do not have a choice. They end up leveraged into acting for the party's interest over the people's interests.
We do have a choice but it is not one of the two entrenched parties. Our lives are not made of only yes or no choices. Our country cannot function well in a way that would make our everyday lives fall apart.
